Glenside  ( Cottage ) is a small family home within the Village of Castlecary. Glenside is officially 180 years old, but it can be dated back using old records and maps to nearly 300 years old. Glenside has had a colourful and eventfull past over the past 300 years, and its many occupants have seen many events over the years, ranging from, The Jacobite uprising, World War 1 & 2, invention of the motor car, aeroplane, space travel, the discovery of Australia, USA Indipendace, to present day matters.

Glenside Cottage has survived Civil uprest to World Wars, and has remained intact, which has enabled many families over these hundreds of years to enjoy a perfect home to bring up their families in pleasent surroundings within the beautiful village of Castlecary.

However ! at the start of 1990's, Glenside was to face its biggest threat of its history, when the Conservative Government decided to upgrade the A80 road to the M80 Motorway. This decision was later given the backing of the Labour Government and the Scottish Executive.

Several Demolision Orders were published for family homes along the route of this new Motorway, and Glenside Cottage was one the homes which was to be demolished.

At the time of these troubles for Glenside, the MacBeath family ( Albert, Marjory, Steven, Andrew & Stuart ) were the occupants of this home under threat. The MacBeath family were offered a financial deal to sell the property to the Government so that the demolision process would be made easy, and the Motorway could be built faster.

The MacBeath family refused this large financial offer, and decided to fight to save their home from demolision. With the help from Castlecary Residents Association, Castlecary Community Council, Castlecary Resident, Cumbernauld Resident & Council Groups and all our extended family, the fight to save Glenside was a long a hard fight.

After over 10 years of meetings, demonstrations, petitions, marches and on occasion Civil disobediance, the Government decided to scale down its larger road building programme and Glenside Cottage was saved from demolision.

This page is a Tribute and a Thank You to all the people who helped to win the fight for Glenside.
The MacBeath Family shall always remember all our friends who gave up so much time to help our family.
We shall always remember and you all, and we will always be in you debt.
